In 1989, Bob and Ellen Snow were adult chaperones for a youth
work team in Honduras. The group visited an orphanage. As they were leaving, Bob
heard a powerful call from God to enter the mission field.
"In 1985, when I became a deacon, I believed I was being
called to this servanthood ministry. This call was even more powerful".
In 1991, Bob asked Ellen what she thought about giving up their
secular jobs and entering the mission field. Her response: " I wondered
when you would answer his call".
In 1992, the Snows became missionaries for the South American
Missionary Society (SAMS). In 1994, Bob quit his job as public information
director for the mayor of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Ellen left her job at the
Nebraska Library Commission.
Neither Bob nor Ellen spoke Spanish, so they attended language
school in San Jose, Costa Rica. On December 7th, 1995, the Snows began serving
the Lord in the Dominican Republic (DR). In 1998, the Presiding Bishop appointed
them missionaries for the United States Episcopal Church.
Bob and Ellen work in the Diocesan office. Bob is the
administrative assistant to the Bishop and coordinates special projects. For
example, Bob worked with St Stephen's Church (Iglesia San Esteban) in San Pedro
de Macoris to develop a medical clinic for the poor, the Clinic of Hope and
Charity (Clinica Esperanza y Caridad) . He also developed a scholarship (beca)
program to provide financial assistance to children from poor families who want
their children to attend one of the 17 Episcopal Schools in the DR. Churches and
individuals can help by providing $250 scholarships.
Ellen coordinates medical and work teams coming into the
Diocese. There are five times more teams coming to the DR now than when Ellen
arrived. Ellen also writes grants for the Diocese and prepares materials in
English for the Bishop.
Snows are from the Diocese of Nebraska. Bob served as Deacon of
St Matthew's Church in Lincoln for 10 years. They were actively involved in
prison ministry before going into the foreign mission field. Bob served a
part-time chaplain at a maximum security prison. For eight years they presented
Marriage Encounter weekends and coordinated the first Marriage Encounter for
deaf couples. They also helped coordinate the first Happenings weekends in
Nebraska and in the DR. They have served on Cursillo teams. Ellen was a founder
of Daughters of the King in the DR.
How to help
Like all Episcopal Missionaries, the Snows must raise support
from individuals and interested churches. The Snows do not receive a salary nor
expenses for the Church.
