Colegio San Esteban

Colegio San Esteban (Saint Stephen's School) was
founded in 1922 to serve primarily the English speaking residents of San Pedro
de Macoris. These were the children of immigrants from English speaking islands
who had migrated to the Dominican Republic in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
For many years, it was the premier school in the
area. The school is still quite excellent, but there are now many good
private schools in the area. Located in Barrio Miramar, the school draws from
the entire area of San Pedro.
The high school, or Bachillorato, is the primary
drawing card. The students compete for a place here and are well prepared for
college when they graduate. It is probably the only school in the area to offer
scholarships that allow poor students to attend a good academic school.
