Clinica Esperanza Y CaridadClinica Esperanza y Caridad, the Clinic of Hope and Charity, is operated by the Episcopal Church in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. The clinic was established in cooperation with the Esperanza International Foundation and is dedicated to bringing health services to the poor in the San Pedro area. The following is excerpted from Esperanza's website: "In the Dominican Republic, many children under the age of 5 are malnourished and, therefore, susceptible to preventable diseases. Many mothers in rural and inner-city regions where we work have little access to health education or medical treatment. These regions also have severe sanitation problems; children contract intestinal parasites, which cause slow physical development and increase their risk of infection and death. In 1999, 2,809 children received treatment at The Hope and Charity Clinic through Therapies and Rehabilitation, Special Medicine, General Medicine, Pharmacy, and Laboratory Testing. This figure almost doubled in the year 2000 by servicing 5,000 children. In 2001 the Clinic served 11,872 patients! And received the Dominican Republic's award for best Rehabilitation Center. 2002 looks as promising, early this year we had a Grand Opening for a new (much needed) Dental facility in the clinic. Each year Esperanza is able to serve more and more people through the clinic. Individuals, children and families are benefiting long-term by becoming educated, healthy, productive, and self-sufficient allowing them to contribute positively to their communities. The knowledge gained from the Clinic’s training, treatment and consultations in proper hygiene and Mother Child Health can be passed down generation by generation and to other members in the community." By 2004, over 17000 patients were served at the Clinic.
