The wells

In the 1990's, a number of water wells were provided in rural areas by Rotary Clubs from Minnesota. Several years later, a Rotarian was visiting and came upon one of the wells as a woman came to get water.

"I remember when they put in the wells", she said. "That was when the children stopped dying."

Definition of Stupid

Observations of an astute Colegio Scholarship Student, dedicated to attending University.

Gringo: "Where do you think you should go to the University? Here or in Santo Domingo?"

Student: "I think here. The school is just as good and my family is here. That is also very important."

Gringo: "I'm sure you will do well wherever you go."

Student: "Oh, yeah! (of course) That is because I am not stupid."

Gringo: "Well, I know you are not stupid!"

Student: "No, no. What I mean is that I know I have the ability and you give me the opportunity. I think if a person has the ability and the opportunity and they don't take advantage of it, that person is really stupid!"

Studying Hard

After returning a borrowed textbook the night before final exams.

Gringo: "You didn't tell me that you didn't have the textbooks. This year we will get you textbooks."

Student, hefting a thick stack of class notes: "I have never had textbooks. I am afraid that if I had my own textbooks, I would not study so hard."
