Adopt A SchoolIn 2001, Colegio Kids was formed to help provide scholarships and to provide other assistance to the schools and the kids. In our first year, our donors provided funds for 60 scholarships and for the re-plumbing of Colegio San Esteban in San Pedro. In 2002, they provided nearly 90 scholarships and funded work on the emergency electrical system. We also arranged for and funded shipping of a container of over 20,000 books supplied by the Sabre Foundation. In addition, four students received assistance that allowed them to attend UCE, the University in San Pedro. We have committed to providing the scholarship needs of Colegio San Esteban and Centro Buen Pastor. In adopting these schools, we have also taken charge of administering the details of collecting and handling funds and of assigning students to sponsors. We provide an English translation of scholarship documents for the sponsors. Students are selected for scholarships by the directors of the schools. Christ Church, Cooperstown, NY has provided 40 scholarships to Colegio San Andres in Santo Domingo for many years. Saint James Church in Oneonta, NY has provided 50 scholarships to Colegio Santa Cruz in Santa Fe, DR for the past several years. Many churches have funded scholarships as an Outreach activity. We heartily commend this, but believe that the real rewards are reaped by individual sponsors. The Diocese would like to duplicate this "adopt a school" concept in the other 13 schools. Responsibilities of the sponsors might include obtaining scholarships for the needy students at the schools, providing school materials, raising funds to purchase equipment or make repairs, and perhaps recruiting a volunteer team to help repair or repaint the school in readiness for the school year. Sponsor groups can focus on a given school and get to know and communicate with the people responsible for it. This is very rewarding to all involved. Colegio Kids will be very happy to share with you any materials we develop as well as our thoughts on how to implement such a program The help we have been able to provide has come from less than 0.1% of the Episcopalians in the US. Think what an impact the rest could have!
