Colegio Kids; A ModelFor more than five years, Jack Keester of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Lincoln Nebraska has supported at least 10 scholarship students. Two years ago, Jack was part of a team which worked at San Esteban in San Pedro de Macoris. In many ways, this visit changed Jack's life, as well as the lives of several young people in the San Pedro area. Jack has now made several trips to the Dr and provided assistance to San Esteban and its students. Jack tells people about his "Dominican granddaughters ", and brings his own granddaughters to the Dr to meet them. For many years, Jack was a successful businessman in the United States. Using these skills, he formed a non-profit corporation called "Colegio Kids" dedicated to providing educational opportunities to the poor in the San Pedro area of the DR. Last year, Colegio Kids obtained over 60 scholarships, most of these from new sponsors. Colegio Kids also raised funds to make several significant improvements to San Esteban. Furthermore, this summer Colegio Kids raised over $3800 to pay the shipping for 20,000 books provided by the Sabre Foundation, a non-profit organization in the US which provides books to schools in Third-World countries. In September, Jack and Deacon Rich Kelly will take pictures of scholarship applicants in the San Pedro area. Colegio Kids has offered to work with individuals and churches interested in helping Episcopal schools in other areas of the Dr, and has ideas and materials to share as models.
