Book Project
Our schools in the Dominican republic are woefully short of books. We in the US are accustomed to our schools having large libraries of resource books to supplement the text books we supply for each class. In the DR, these libraries are all but non-exist ant and textbooks must be purchased by the students, if they can afford them. Colegio Kids began a search in 2001 to locate a source of donated books. In early 2002 we contacted the Sabre Foundation, located in Cambridge, MA. This foundation serves to coordinate the needs of third world organizations with the charitable arms of major book publishers. The Foundation Executive Director was indeed interested in the DR and paid a visit there in March, 2002. She met with the Snows and visited several of our schools. The foundation agreed to supply a container of books and provided the school system with a list of hundreds of titles to select from. The book order was placed and was shipped in late July, 2002. The container cleared customs and 20,180 books were distributed to the schools in early September! The books had a market value of over $145,000, a sum the school system could not begin to afford. Shipping costs of $4000 were paid by Colegio Kids, with the aid of numerous donors and with the help of a donation by the Church Periodical Club. Many thanks from the kids to all the donors - publishers, Sabre, CPC and individuals. This project will indeed make a big difference to the quality of our schools in the DR. We plan to ask for another container of books in 2004. It will take several shipments to fill the needs of the school system. Please Click on the photos to enlarge them.
